Deep breath.
The first order of business is to find a venue. Jim and I are looking for a beautiful, serene mountain location with plenty of outdoor activities. We really aren't planning on doing a "typical" or traditional wedding and are more looking for a place where our friends and family can relax, get to know each other, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. As I navigate through pages and pages of B&B's and Inns around the region, I find myself judging the places based on the quality of their websites and pictures. In this day and age, if a website looks run down or outdated, I automatically assume the place is too! And when I find a site that looks nice and modern (one suggested, "reading your Kindle on the veranda" - loved that) I assume that everything about the place will be upscale and well maintained.
Of course as I'm online browsing for venues, my ADD kicks in and I often get sidetracked looking at other aspects of the wedding too. Color schemes, guest gifts, flowers, dresses, invitations, cakes, you name it - I've clicked around looking for ideas. I love the casual, laid-back concept for a wedding and The Knot has some really great photo galleries and articles. You can also add items and ideas to your own personal "Inspiration Board" to keep track of things you like. I haven't fully experimented with this feature yet, but I have a feeling it will be helpful with keeping things organized.
Speaking of organization, since this is one of my WEAKEST areas, I'm attempting to be consistent with how I track of things for the wedding. Usually I have too many ideas and try to utilize all of them and end up spread all over the place. For the wedding planning, I currently I have a separate email address for correspondence with vendors, shared budget documents with Jim, and a notebook to write out ideas for when we sit down for planning sessions. I will keep you posted on how my methodology changes as the process continues!
